As an extension of the robust Windows Desktop functionality, Omnissa is introducing the newest device type: Windows Server.  Windows Server will be added to the long list of Workspace ONE UEM computing devices--first in beta introduction, with general availability to follow.

Soon you will be able to manage all Windows computers via Workspace ONE UEM.  Below is a high-level overview, as well as an invitation to a webinar where more details will be discussed.

Not Just Windows Desktop Anymore!

Many Workspace ONE customers have asked for Windows Server support, so the Windows product team within Omnissa took on the challenge.  As the work effort was assessed, it became clear that porting Windows Desktop functionality to Windows Server had much overlap, but yet some functionality is different.

Whether Windows Servers are hosting databases, file and print services, or even Horizon virtual desktops, there are many base similarities to Windows Desktops, including the need for:

  • Windows Updates
  • Bitlocker support
  • Policies
  • Deployment of applications
  • Remote administration
  • Machine inventory (via sensors)

The product team likewise assessed that Windows Server has some unique functionality, such as roles and features, that is different than Windows Desktop.  In conjunction with some key customers, the product team got to work determining how to best address support for Windows Server.

Let us tell you more about the new Windows Server functionality and requirements, as well as how you can get involved with the beta.

Windows Server Functionality and Beta Features

The new Workspace ONE UEM Windows Server functionality will address the following:

  • Enrollment and Onboarding.  This includes pre-registration and silent enrollment, as well as installation of the Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, or 2025 operating system.  During the beta, only servers with the full desktop experience (i.e., not Server Core) are supported.
  • Intelligent Hub.  As with all Workspace ONE UEM devices, Intelligent Hub must be installed.  During the beta, a special version of Intelligent Hub will be provided.  Details will be provided within the beta welcome information.
  • Baselines and Profiles.  On the surface, Baselines and Profiles, including Windows Updates, will function much the same as the current Windows Desktop; however, the underlying technologies may be somewhat different.  For example, new administrative template (ADMX) Profiles will be available for the Windows Server operating systems, and server-specific Baselines will be released in the coming months.

  • Software Distribution.  Just like Windows Desktop, applications can be deployed to Windows Server, and the process is similar.  Application updates, publishing options, and Smart Groups are the same as Windows Desktop except that dropdown options now distinguish between Windows Desktop and Windows Server.
